Territory Man
05:38
|
|||
There's a truck out on the road
Spinning wheels & moving slow
Cars are backed up far behind him
Pushing hard for him to go
But those driver's got no clue
What a man's supposed to do
When he finds himself a stranger
In a world that he once knew
So give him a wave & ease around
The lights have changed in his old town
Trouble is he don't understand
The price you pay for Old Glory
He's a Territory Man
All the roads he used to drive
Now are barely left alive
Suffocating under blacktop
Rolling in waves across the night
So he loads up his ride
And with his dog by his side
He heads up North to where it runs out
Looking for a place to hide, hide
So give him a wave & ease around
The lights have changed in his old town
Trouble is he don't understand
The price you pay for Old Glory
He's a Territory Man
So give him a wave & ease around
The world has turned his world around
Trouble is he don't understand
The price you pay for Old Glory
He's a Territory Man

Yellowhead Highway
02:57
|
|||
There's a road and it's talking
About the wheels that have crossed it
Hauling dreams day by day
On the Yellowhead Highway
It don't matter if you drive it
If you walk it or you ride it
There is nothing in your way
On the Yellowhead highway
Over mountains and the valleys
Past the buildings and the alleys
Through the farmlands and the plains
On the Yellowhead Highway
If there's a road up yonder
I hope that it will be
Just like the Yellowhead Highway
For me
Over mountains and the valleys
Past the buildings and the alleys
Through the farmlands and the plains
On the Yellowhead Highway

Tanglefoot
05:19
|
|||
Old Tanglefoot's coming
Moving down the road
Singing songs about living and
Dying like the good book says
Ask him where he's going
Brother he don't know
He's just heading for the treasure
At the end
There were times when life was easy
They will rise again I suppose
There's a bell ringing
Inside my head
Like a long distance call
From long ago
No need to answer
That telephone
It's a message from someone
I used to know
Asking where did you lose your bearings
And how did you lose your soul. oh
I've drifting on
Far from where I've come
It's blowing away
It's blowing away
Like the wind out on the highway
Like the dust that fills my veins
Free hotel bible, two dollar wine
There's gonna be some answers tonight
Before it's gone
Me and Tanglefoot hunkered
On a riverside
Trading antidotes and bible quotes
'Til dawn
There are hearts that can't be vanquished
There are souls that can't be won, oh
I've drifting on
Far from where I've come
It's blowing away
It's blowing away
Like the wind out on the highway
Like the dust that fills my veins
I've drifting on
Far from where I've come

In An Old Hotel
04:52
|
|||
I'm sitting up late in an old hotel
Listening to the voices I know so well
One dreamer with his head on fire
A writer sleepless at his typewriter
A panhandler begging for his bread
A lonesome gambler calling in his debts
I can hear the truth through the alibis
They're going to try
To get it right this time
I switch off the light and watch the night pour in
And dance with the music flowing on the wind
A young woman with the man she loves
A crazy couple dancing up above
A drinking party starting down below
A lonely wide singing soft and low
I can hear the truth through the alibis
They're going to try
To get it right this time

Falling Away
03:49
|
|||
Remember the days when we danced in the sun
Remember the night we had dreaming
Remember the moments that slipped through the light
The dirt roads and old barns, the fiddle and tunes
The jug wine and jangling kiss to the moon
Pull me tight to your memory I'm falling away.
The long goiden twightlight that turned into dawn
Was all that we once ever needed
Here's a toast to the old rusted latch on the door
To the bonfire dancing and poems to the soul
And the funny old whistle that hissed through the coals
Pull me tight to your memory I'm falling away
It all can come back in the flip of a thumb
Something tells me that it's never leaving
It's just hiding behind all the webs that we've spun
O'er the singing and laughter and tales until dawn
By the glow of the candle that melted on down
Pull me tight to your memory I'm falling away
I'm going somewhere where the living is free
Where the faces aren't caught up in trying
Where the lips of the gypsy still whisper to me
Help yourself to the whistles, the flute and the drums
The Mardis Gras beads and the sugar cane rum
The face paint and high leather boots that have come
Down the miles of long highway from where you've begun
Pull me tight to your memory I'm falling away

Last Bird Out
05:11
|
|||
Will the last bird out kindly shut of the light
Take a minute, look around at everything in sight
When you see it's all gone, though you know it's not right
Will the last bird out kindly shut off the light
Will the last bird out take a minute to recall
Back when everything was green back before they paved it all
Ah, but people got to live and it as such a pretty sight (site)
So will the last bird out kindly shut off the light
Will the last bird out take a picture before you go
Of what's left of the place so your grandkids will know
How a bright shining day got turned into night
Will the last bird out kindly shut off the light
There's a world somewhere, maybe a light year or two
Where we can start again where it's fresh and new
Maybe this time friend we can try to do it right
So will the last bird out kindly shut off the light,

My Fallen Grace
05:59
|
|||
We met by happenstance
outside the Hotel DeVille
She was doing a shiver dance
I had a long time to kill
She was weathered a little
Grace was the name that she'd give
And she invited me up to kill time
At the Hotel Deville
"You look like a soldier on leave"
she said with a grin
"Yeah, a long leave I told her
As long as hell is for sin"
She said "Sin's underrated"
And poured me some liquor she had
"When it's the best you can do
It's all you can do to be bad"
Life is wasted, life is wasted
On the 9 out of 10
That don't have the sense
To taste it
She had a 3 string guitar
And I hummed a little refrain
A sweet little melody
I sang to my fallen Grace
The night is for dancing
And that's all we did until dawn
She spun like a school girl
Til the last of the neon was gone
"Ain't it grand to be living
Ain't it fine to be just where we are"
She whispered softly
And fell back to sleep in my arms
Life is wasted, life is wasted
On the 9 out of 10
That don't have the sense
To taste it
She fell asleep and the lines fell away from her face
And I sang a lullaby all about my fallen Grace
Now the sidewalk is steaming
The morning is burning away
I don't know where I'm going
I can't say how long I will stay
But if you see her, tell her
I took the time and the place
And carved out a memory
I'm calling My Fallen Grace
Life is wasted, life is wasted
On the 9 out of 10
That don't have the sense
To taste it
We met by happenstance
Outside the Hotel Deville
She was doing a shiver dance
I had a long time to kill...

It Don't Take Much
04:07
|
|||
Weill I had my fill of the sacred cup
And I lost my will for keeping up
I ain't going down that golden road
Where souls are hocked and hearts are sold
A saxophone wind in a cordwood night
I don't know where it blows
But I'll follow it down like a bird in flight
"Cause all I know
Is it don't take much
No, it don't take much
Just give a little up
"Cause it don't take much
Come along with me
I'll tell you what I'll do
You give south to me
I'll give north to you
And east and west
They can tag along
When your arms hang free
You can't go wrong
Billboards waving on
Pretzel roads
But we can own it all
Pack up your savings
Sell out low
Climb on over that wall
Cause It don't take much
No, it don't take much
Just give a little up
"Cause it don't take much
Well it don't take much
No it don''t take much
Aw it don't take much
Just give a little up

Drive & Forget
03:58
|
|||
The dust is hardly settled
On a heartbreak that's new
Something tells you that it ain't done yet
'Til the steam is off the kettle
There's only one thing left to do
Drive and forget
Some people think that leaving
Is the hardest thing to do
Weil, does anybody wanna bet?
Try being left, believing
There is noone left for you
Drive and forget
Drive and forget
That your heart belongs to someone
Drive and forget
That is over now and done
When tomorrows just a question
And yesterday is too
Drive and forget
Oh, the fields are flying past you
And the clouds are crowding blue
There's the makings of a good sunset
If you move a little faster
You can let it swallow you
Drive and forget

Outskirts Of Tucson
05:51
|
|||
It was out somewhere
Where the moon was high
And the ocotillo blooms were closed up for the night
She rescued me
From a restless crowd
And led me to courtyard on the edge of town
Her eyes they glowed like rubies
Flashing from the moon and the veranda lights
Crickets and coyotes and our breathing
Were the only sounds we heard that night
On the outskirts of Tucson
Where the Santa Cruz sands run
Will I ever go beck, son
To the outskirts of Tucson
That was long ago
Yeah and far away
And the memory of that night haunts me to this day
I have lost it all
Several times or more
Sometimes I can't see beyond a barroom door
Sometimes in the smoke and haze
I think I hear call my name-I stop and freeze
I look around from face to face
But all I see are strangers looking back at me
From the outskirts of Tucson
Where the Santa Cruz sands run
Will I ever go beck, son
To the outskirts of Tucson
I was fast asleep
Dreaming of
Liquid rubies raining from the sky above
She was standing there
In a shimmering light
And I woke up to the sun burning in my eyes
I walked up to a corner store
Ask the fella where this road was taking me
He looked me up and down a time or two
Said, "There's only one place left to be"
On the outskirts of Tucson
Where the Santa Cruz sands run
Will I ever get beck, son
To the outskirts of Tucson
To the outskirts of Tucson
Baked red in the pale sun
Here I am back, son
On the outskirts of Tucson

Junkyard Dog
03:23
|
|||
Scrap iron palace
Step inside the gates
That hound won't hurt you
He's a junkyard dog
Rust, wrecks & remnants
Old castaways
It's just a home for a
Junkyard dog
He don't know nothing
Outside these walls
Don't worry about him
He's a junkyard dog
He roams & rambles
Now and then he falls
You take your chances
With a junkyard dog
Once he was a scrapper
Wild, loose & free
A sight to see that's for sure
Something must have bit him
Brought him to his knees
He ain't got the heart anymore
So leave all your garbage
He'll make it pay
He's used to scrambling
He"s a junkyard dog
Stop a while & look around
No need to stay
But it's the last stop
For a junkyard dog
Yeah, it's the last stop
For a junkyard dog

Night Full Of Rain
04:25
|
|||
Here we go again
You and me heading 'round the bend
With some miles that must be burned
While the world creaks and turn
Trying to reach a brand new day
On a night full of rain
The things that we've run from
Are far away and gone
And all the words that we might say
The wipers slap away
As if we had to say a thing
On a night full of rain
It's nothing fancy
It's all been told
Just the rain on the hood
And the tires slipping on the road
We could turn around now but what the hell
We might as well just ride until we float
You know it's true what people say
How all the world gets washed away
Little lies & scattered dream
Flow away within the streams
"Til all that's left is what remains
A night full of rain
